Romania’s Bucharest Court of Appeal on Tuesday ordered former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu and businessman Ionel Rusen into preventive detention for 30 days, overturning an earlier ruling that had placed them under judicial control. Police vehicles arrived at Bucharest’s Central Detention Centre as supporters gathered outside, chanting “Calin, Calin!” and waving Romanian flags, while gendarmes formed a cordon behind metal barriers. Georgescu and Rusen are being investigated by Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) over alleged involvement in an organised criminal group and aggravated fraud. Prosecutors allege that a businessman was deceived in a scheme involving promised access to foreign financing, causing an alleged loss of 1.1 million euros. Georgescu, who finished first in the opening round of Romania’s 2024 presidential election, was later barred from standing in the rerun after the Constitutional Court annulled the original vote.

Swedish MEP Charlie Weimers raises concerns about anti-Semitism, migration and social integration in Sweden, arguing that conflicts from the Middle East are increasingly affecting Swedish society. He discusses reports of anti-Semitic incidents, the security concerns of Sweden’s Jewish community, demonstrations and vandalism, and criticises political leaders and public service media for their response. Weimers argues that Sweden must strengthen its approach to immigration, tackle radicalisation and reaffirm its commitment to tolerance, secularism and national values. His remarks form part of a wider European debate over migration, integration, religious freedom and public safety.

Sweden’s Sweden Democrats have suffered their biggest electoral setback after years of gaining ground on immigration and pushing Swedish politics to the right. The anti-immigration party was projected to win 17.6% of the vote, around three percentage points below its previous result, while the centre-left bloc appeared on course for a narrow parliamentary majority. A drone strike set a chemical tanker ablaze in the Black Sea off Romania, leaving seven people missing and raising fresh concerns over the spillover of Russia’s war in Ukraine into NATO territory. Romanian authorities said five crew members were rescued from the San Marino-flagged *Wine Trader* after the incident southeast of Sulina on October 15, while another tanker, the 'Yara J', reported a fire in Romanian territorial waters a day earlier. Romania and Bulgaria have reported a series of drone-related maritime incidents in the Black Sea, prompting renewed calls for stronger NATO counter-drone defenses. Romanian defense analyst Radu Tudor urged the alliance to move beyond political statements and strengthen its military response, including deploying anti-drone systems on land and at sea. Romanian authorities have not publicly confirmed who launched the latest drone strike. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said the alliance had discussed Black Sea security with Romanian President Nicusor Dan and Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev, adding that NATO was strengthening counter-drone capabilities along its eastern flank. The incidents underscore growing security concerns for commercial shipping and NATO allies bordering the Black Sea.

The Netherlands and European Council President Antonio Costa have called for a modernised European Union budget while reaffirming their commitment to the International Criminal Court following the announcement of US sanctions against the court. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten condemned the sanctions and said diplomatic efforts had secured a six-month window to seek a resolution with Washington, warning that the Netherlands and its partners were prepared to take further measures if necessary to protect ICC judges and staff. Costa also reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to the court and international justice. The leaders discussed plans for the EU’s next long-term budget, which is intended to take effect in January 2028, with priorities including defence, border security, competitiveness, research and continued support for Ukraine. Jetten said the Netherlands would not support a proposed budget increase of more than 50% without modernisation, while Costa argued that new EU revenue sources would be needed to fund shared priorities without placing excessive pressure on national budgets. Jetten also backed faster EU decision-making on geopolitical and security matters but expressed reservations about extending qualified majority voting to fiscal and some social policies.

A major rail outage disrupted parts of the Netherlands, affecting thousands of passengers during the morning rush hour. Dutch rail infrastructure operator ProRail said material was found at multiple locations on the tracks and appeared to have been deliberately placed, prompting a police investigation into suspected sabotage. Services around Zwolle, Deventer and Amersfoort were among those badly affected, while authorities worked to clear tracks and restore train operations across the network.

🔴FRANCE Protest LIVE: France Erupts in Protest Over Rising Costs | Macron Under Pressure | CNBC TV18
Live coverage of a protest march in Paris against high living costs, rising fuel prices, public spending cuts and poor school conditions and teacher shortages.
PARIS - "Yellow Vests" call for protests again following two weekend protests that drew tens of thousands to the streets including students, teachers and other workers.
Live from central Paris where students take to the streets to demand improved school and education conditions, and against the government. It comes after a demonstration ban by French authorities put in place after a weekend of violent clashes and looting - it was later lifted.
France is preparing for another day of demonstrations on Saturday, with 70,000 police officers being deployed to prevent a repeat of the violence that erupted during protests earlier this month.
Reuters reported that the rallies, coinciding with Halloween, are being organised by students, trade unions and members of the Yellow Vest movement over rising living costs, fuel prices and deteriorating public services.
Authorities have warned of a high risk of violence, particularly as some gatherings could continue into the night.
In a development, France's top court has overturned a lower court's decision allowing protesters to march from Bastille to Place de la Nation in central Paris.
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that "illegitimate" protests would be banned in the coming days, while those from organised groups such as unions would be offered alternative paths for the marches to protect businesses. The government has said it will put French soldiers in the street after rioting and looting broke out on the fringes of mass peaceful demonstrations over the weekend. Follow our liveblog for the latest updates.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he would convene a defence council meeting on Friday ahead of mass demonstrations planned for 24 October, following weekend protests that erupted into some of the country’s worst street violence in years.
The French president said only demonstrations organised by trade unions would be authorised nationwide on Saturday. He added that prefects, the government’s regional representatives, could ban unauthorised gatherings, particularly those organised by groups lacking the “legitimacy” to do so.
Macron also condemned what he described as “sedition” by far-left groups, warning they posed a “grave danger” to the Republic. He denounced the “criminal acts” committed during the unrest and called for “extreme measures” in response.
