The Netherlands and European Council President Antonio Costa have called for a modernised European Union budget while reaffirming their commitment to the International Criminal Court following the announcement of US sanctions against the court. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten condemned the sanctions and said diplomatic efforts had secured a six-month window to seek a resolution with Washington, warning that the Netherlands and its partners were prepared to take further measures if necessary to protect ICC judges and staff. Costa also reaffirmed the EUβs commitment to the court and international justice. The leaders discussed plans for the EUβs next long-term budget, which is intended to take effect in January 2028, with priorities including defence, border security, competitiveness, research and continued support for Ukraine. Jetten said the Netherlands would not support a proposed budget increase of more than 50% without modernisation, while Costa argued that new EU revenue sources would be needed to fund shared priorities without placing excessive pressure on national budgets. Jetten also backed faster EU decision-making on geopolitical and security matters but expressed reservations about extending qualified majority voting to fiscal and some social policies.

A major rail outage disrupted parts of the Netherlands, affecting thousands of passengers during the morning rush hour. Dutch rail infrastructure operator ProRail said material was found at multiple locations on the tracks and appeared to have been deliberately placed, prompting a police investigation into suspected sabotage. Services around Zwolle, Deventer and Amersfoort were among those badly affected, while authorities worked to clear tracks and restore train operations across the network.
