NATO on Alert: Black Sea Drone Strike Sets Tanker Ablaze, Fears of Wider War | Times Now World
A drone strike set a chemical tanker ablaze in the Black Sea off Romania, leaving seven people missing and raising fresh concerns over the spillover of Russia’s war in Ukraine into NATO territory. Romanian authorities said five crew members were rescued from the San Marino-flagged *Wine Trader* after the incident southeast of Sulina on October 15, while another tanker, the 'Yara J', reported a fire in Romanian territorial waters a day earlier. Romania and Bulgaria have reported a series of drone-related maritime incidents in the Black Sea, prompting renewed calls for stronger NATO counter-drone defenses. Romanian defense analyst Radu Tudor urged the alliance to move beyond political statements and strengthen its military response, including deploying anti-drone systems on land and at sea. Romanian authorities have not publicly confirmed who launched the latest drone strike. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said the alliance had discussed Black Sea security with Romanian President Nicusor Dan and Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev, adding that NATO was strengthening counter-drone capabilities along its eastern flank. The incidents underscore growing security concerns for commercial shipping and NATO allies bordering the Black Sea.
