The Dutch cabinet approved plans on 16 October to put an additional €18 billion into maintaining and renewing roads, bridges, railways and waterworks. The priority is keeping existing infrastructure safe and reliable, as ageing structures increasingly suffer faults.

The IJmuiden pumping complex, Haringvliet Bridge and high-speed rail line are among the projects earmarked for investment. However, other projects will be paused because of funding shortages or practical obstacles.

The government will now discuss its priorities with parliament and regional authorities. The financial changes are due to be incorporated into the spring budget update.
