Roofman : Romance Behind the Toy Store Attic
Roofman (2025) is a crime comedy-drama film with a runtime of 126 minutes, directed by Derek Cianfrance. The movie is based on the extraordinary true story of Jeffrey Manchester, an American military veteran who, facing severe financial struggles, robs dozens of fast-food restaurants by breaking in through the roof . After executing a clever prison escape, he secretly lives inside the attic of a Toys "R" Us store for six months. However, his ingenious hideout begins to unwrap when he falls deeply in love with Leigh, a single mother working as an employee at the toy store.
The primary selling point of this Paramount Pictures release is the incredibly charming performance of Channing Tatum, who masterfully portrays a criminal with a polite, witty, and deeply vulnerable human side. The chemistry between Tatum and Kirsten Dunst as Leigh feels emotionally resonant and natural, beautifully depicting a sweet romance built on a false identity. Director Derek Cianfrance, usually known for his melancholic dramas, successfully infuses a warmer touch with fresh humor, all supported by stunning 35mm film cinematography that delivers a beautiful wave of early 2000s nostalgia.
Roofman successfully delivers a unique, funny, and touching crime drama about the consequences of life choices and the universal human longing for a home. Despite experiencing some runtime drag midway through the story, the exceptional performances from the cast make this film an incredibly rewarding watch. Jeffrey Manchester's story serves as a sweet yet poignant reminder that even the most perfect hiding spot can never truly conceal us from the realities of our past.
