Balkans chaos today..!! Unexpected snow buries Bosnia, Bulgaria, Kosovo and Romania

A sharp cold snap hit the Balkans on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, bringing the season's first snow to higher mountain areas across several countries.

In Bulgaria, the first snowflakes were reported at the Pamporovo resort on September 22. According to the Mountain Rescue Service, the snowfall was light and brief, failing to form a layer of snow on the ground.

Romania recorded its first autumn snowfall in the highest reaches of the Southern Carpathian Mountains overnight between Monday and Tuesday, followed by heavier snow overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Meteorological Administration. A thick layer of snow covered the Transfagarasan, Romania's most famous mountain road.
The heaviest snow accumulation occurred around Bâlea Lake. Temperatures dropped by 10 degrees Celsius across southern and western Romania, marking a drastic shift from the previous summer-like weather.

In Serbia, the first snow fell on the highest peaks of the Golija and Kopaonik mountains ahead of the autumn equinox, according to local media reports. Temperatures across Serbia are expected to drop gradually.

Kosovo also recorded its first snowfall, as reported by Albanian-language news portals. Heavy snow was reported in the mountainous areas of the Deçan and Istog municipalities in the country's west.

Snow also fell on the highest peaks of Mount Olympus in Greece, according to photos published on Tuesday. Temperatures remained relatively high across most of the country, although weather conditions deteriorated in some areas.

Bosnia and Herzegovina recorded its first snowfall on Mount Bjelašnica. According to the country's Hydrometeorological Institute, temperatures there hovered around 0 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, dropping to minus 1 degree at the summit.

In Montenegro, temperatures considered very low for late September were recorded on Tuesday morning. Sub-freezing temperatures were also recorded at other locations, dropping to minus 3.3 degrees in Kosanica and minus 0.1 degrees in Njegovudja.
