Romanian authorities took former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu into custody on Tuesday after a Bucharest Court of Appeals ordered his detention for 30 days pending a criminal investigation for fraud.

Prosecutors allege that Georgescu and two other suspects persuaded a Romanian businessman to hand over €1.1 million by claiming they could help him obtain a credit line of up to €15 million from a foreign financial institution. Georgescu denies wrongdoing.

The appeals court overturned an earlier decision that had placed him under judicial control. The ruling is final.

Hundreds of Georgescu supporters gathered outside the courthouse in Bucharest as he left the building.

Georgescu was the frontrunner in Romania's cancelled 2024 presidential election. The vote was annulled amid allegations of Russian interference, which Moscow denied. A re-run held in May 2025 was won by pro-European centrist President Nicușor Dan.
