Romanian authorities took former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu into custody on Tuesday after a Bucharest Court of Appeals ordered his detention for 30 days pending a criminal investigation for fraud.
Prosecutors allege that Georgescu and two other suspects persuaded a Romanian businessman to hand over €1.1 million by claiming they could help him obtain a credit line of up to €15 million from a foreign financial institution. Georgescu denies wrongdoing.
The appeals court overturned an earlier decision that had placed him under judicial control. The ruling is final.
Hundreds of Georgescu supporters gathered outside the courthouse in Bucharest as he left the building.
Georgescu was the frontrunner in Romania's cancelled 2024 presidential election. The vote was annulled amid allegations of Russian interference, which Moscow denied. A re-run held in May 2025 was won by pro-European centrist President Nicușor Dan.

Romania’s Bucharest Court of Appeal on Tuesday ordered former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu and businessman Ionel Rusen into preventive detention for 30 days, overturning an earlier ruling that had placed them under judicial control. Police vehicles arrived at Bucharest’s Central Detention Centre as supporters gathered outside, chanting “Calin, Calin!” and waving Romanian flags, while gendarmes formed a cordon behind metal barriers. Georgescu and Rusen are being investigated by Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) over alleged involvement in an organised criminal group and aggravated fraud. Prosecutors allege that a businessman was deceived in a scheme involving promised access to foreign financing, causing an alleged loss of 1.1 million euros. Georgescu, who finished first in the opening round of Romania’s 2024 presidential election, was later barred from standing in the rerun after the Constitutional Court annulled the original vote.
